  2. Habitat for Humanity also acquired their full $8,000
  3. The Winchester District Memorial Hospital (WDMH) requested $7,500 and were awarded with $2,000

The following 7 charities applied (appearing in alphabetical order):

Organization: Chesterville & District Agricultural Society
Project:           Horse Show Ring Fencing
Request:         $6,617

At our fairgrounds in Chesterville (151 Queen St.), there is the base of a large show ring, approximately 180 feet long 75 feet wide, located on the east side of the cattle barn. This ring requires a rejuvenation of the surface, and fencing. Over the years, the grass has crept in making it increasingly difficult to maintain. Fencing will allow us to maintain this surface throughout the season, and it will provide a sturdy barrier between riders and spectators when used as a horse show ring.

This project would consist of scraping of the existing surface, clean sand added to a depth of 2- 3 inches, fencing installed (3 rails with posts at 8 ft intervals), gates at each end, and white stain finish.

The work would be completed by volunteers whom we are ever so grateful for. The cost of the project is for materials only: clean sand ($1,400), lumber ($3,317), screws ($45), gates ($1,000), paint ($370), taxes ($485.15)

The timeline would be to start mid to late May; completion during next 2 to 3 months (aim for end of June).

It is our hope that with your help this revamped area of the fairgrounds will become a hub of activity throughout the summer season, being used by our agricultural community for shows, practice and training events.

Organization: Community Food Share
Project:           Community Learning Kitchen
Request:         $10,000

Community Food Share is striving to be more than simply a food bank with a day-to-day focus on giving food to hungry people. We are evolving into a force for change and we plan to take further action on giving people access to healthy food.

The first step was introducing Healthy Choices. With this recent initiative, we made a commitment to use our food dollars to purchase healthier items in greater quantities including milk, cheese, whole wheat bread, yogurt, fruits and vegetables. It is important that we meet the nutritional needs of our families because everyone deserves healthy and nutritious food.

The next step is to create a community learning kitchen at our Winchester location. This program will allow us to further engage with our clients by offering cooking classes and group activities to help develop their food skills and to encourage healthy eating in an inclusive and positive environment. The objective is to move people toward self-sufficiency by providing practical life skills.

To accomplish this, we need to make some modest renovations to our existing kitchen to bring it up to the standards as outlined by the Eastern Ontario Health Unit. We estimate it will cost us $14,000 to $15,000 to complete the renovations. Financial support from 100 Women Who Care North Dundas will help ensure that the renovations are finished by the summer.

Organization: Dundas County Hospice
Project:           Equipment Loan Program Building Expansion
Request:         $10,000

Since we moved into our new office in 2015, our equipment loan program has grown exponentially. We have been able to almost double the number of people, both palliative and community clients, we have helped, year over year for the last two years. With the increase in demand for this service, we have been able to also increase the number of pieces of equipment we have on hand for loan

This program is unique to our area as it is not offered in many other communities. We hope to be able to continue to offer it as the demand is definitely there and it is greatly appreciated by our clients.

The equipment loan program has filled the garage space that we thought to be so abundant just three years ago. This has left us with few options to store the rest of the items that require outside storage like a riding lawn mower, patio furniture, etc. We are bursting at the seams!

Our ask is for $10,000 toward building an extension on the back of our garage that will give us a permanent storage solution. This will replace the tiny garden shed that is literally falling apart and the temporary storage shelter. Quotes from contractors to build the addition total $14,665 plus HST (which approx. 70% recoverable). We have some potential sources to top up the funds to complete the project. Once the total amount of funding is secured, the project can proceed right away.

Organization: GIAG- Glengarry Inter-Agency Group (Dundas Youth Centre)
Project:           Learn to Cook Simple Healthy Meals
Request:         $10,000

GIAG operates North Dundas Youth Programs in Winchester for youth ages 9 to 17. The current Youth Centre (behind WDMH in the Community Care Building) offers program 2 days a week in Winchester and one day a week in Chesterville. The Youth can do art, science experiments, have movie nights, play various sports, play games while attending our Youth Drop-ins.

Our health meals program would run from June 1st to December 31st, 2018 (once a week for 30 weeks). The initiative will educate and equip youth with good nutrition tips and how to cook nutritious meals on a budget. It will teach them planning/reading food labels, grocery shopping, meal preparation, cultural meals and clean up. They would participate in every aspect of the meal preparation. They would learn food safety and how to handle food while learning social and emotional skills. Proper nutrition is one of many factors that can affect a youth’s health and wellness. This would increase their awareness about healthy eating and assist them in becoming more independent. Youth who will participate in this project will work towards a common interest which will increase their self-confidence, social and emotional skills, thereby increase the chance of them becoming more productive members in their community.

We would provide this once a week at our current Youth Centre at 530 Fred Street in Winchester and the funds would support program and food cost, staff cost, advertising, flyer printing, travel and equipment.

Organization: Habitat for Humanity Cornwall & The Counties
Project:           2018 Dundas County Home Build
Request:         $8,000

Habitat for Humanity Cornwall & The Counties is preparing for our next Dundas Home Build to provide a safe, affordable home for a deserving, local, low-income, working family.

Habitat homes are not given away; 500 hours of ‘sweat equity’ are completed in place of a financial down-payment. Once completed, the home is appraised and sold at fair market value with an interest free mortgage, held by Habitat Cornwall. This ‘hand-up’ helps break the cycle of poverty.

In Winchester, parents Sarah and Alex, and their three children, Owen, Avery and Jonah live in a house which is a constant source of stress. Overcrowding and structural concerns present daily challenges. Medical issues make the living conditions even more difficult. But with a safe home, this young family will thrive.

Alex and Sarah spend their own money on renovations (electrical, structural, etc) for their current rental. This is not a viable, long-term solution. Home ownership with Habitat Cornwall will see this family in a safe, affordable home that will offer the peace of mind and security they deserve.

Habitat will break ground in spring 2018. During the spring and summer, community partners, Habitat staff, and Partner Family members will work side by side to build this home.

The support of 100 Women Who Care North Dundas will quite literally, put a roof over this family’s heads and floors under their feet. Habitat Cornwall respectfully requests support in the amount of $8,000 to offset the costs associated with these construction elements.

Organization: St. Mary’s Catholic School Council
Project:           Junior Playground Equipment
Request:         $7,000

Currently, the school property for outdoor use by students is divided by age: kindergarten to grade 2 in the rear of the building and grades 3 to 6 in the front of the building. Over the past several years, it has been identified that the front yard for the grade 3-6 age group is in need of structure and activity.

Over this time, the school council has fundraised and made provisions for soccer posts, balls, and a variety of outdoor equipment.  However, our efforts are limited in scope, short lived or lost and are not of lasting quality. We have learned that not all students want to play sport and that we need provisions for a wider student body with a broader range of preferences. However, all students like to climb. Since the student issues remain and the need persists, the School Council has prioritized to fundraise, purchase, and install one piece of outdoor play structure equipment.

The cost is $21,000. We are requesting the cost to be shared equally between 100 Women Who Care, our School Council and the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario.

The project would be completed and ready for play by Spring 2019.  Approval of this grant will benefit the North Dundas community by increasing outdoor play opportunities for older kids and enhance the school learning experience for students of our school during recess.

Organization: Winchester District Memorial Hospital Foundation
Project:           Wireless Fetal Monitor
Request:         $7,500

The provincial government doesn’t fund everything that WDMH needs to care for our patients, including medical equipment purchases. That’s where the WDMH Foundation comes in – to work with donors to help fill that funding gap.

One of WDMH’s highest priority medical equipment needs is a wireless fetal monitor for our obstetrics department. We currently have two monitors, but one of them is getting old. The wireless monitor sends information to healthcare staff on a continuous basis. It monitors the baby’s movements, and mom and baby’s heart rates among other crucial information. Because of the wireless capability, mom can stand, walk, and have a shower or a bath. With a wired monitor, moms can only go as far as the cord allows – basically around the bed. This isn’t beneficial as expectant mothers are encouraged to move as much as possible during labour.

Our obstetrics department has a stellar reputation. From July – Sept 2017, 100% of obstetrical patients who answered a survey said they would feel confident recommending our services to their families.

Our donors play a huge role in these results, as it’s only because of them that we have the medical equipment needed to care for moms and our tiniest patients.

The approximate cost of the monitor is $15,431.  The gift of $7,500 would go to our general equipment fund in support of purchases like a new wireless fetal monitor. Once 100% of the funds are raised, the monitor would be purchased within a few weeks.
